Non-indicating Silica Gel

Silica Gel is non-corrosive, odourless, non-toxic and chemically inert. It has a very strong affinity for water and will absorb it. The main component of silica gel is Silicon Dioxide; it is a granular, vitreous, highly porous form of Silica made synthetically from Sodium Silicate and Sulfuric acid under controlled conditions. After it is washed, aged and dried granular and beaded shapes are formed. The beaded form has a higher mechanical strength, therefore does not generate dust, the uniform size reduces gas flow channeling and minimize the pressure drop. Silica gel can absorb water up to 30% or more of its own weight. Silica Gel can be regenerated for re-use by heating at 120 C. It is widely used for absorbing humidity, fungus, moisture and odours. Since it does not contain any indicator, it isn’t easy to ascertain whether it has completely absorbed moisture or not. To ensure that the non-indicating silica gel is still active, humidity indicator cards are used, which provide a visual indication, or, the non-indicating silica gel can be mixed with 10% of blue indicating silica gel or 5% of orange indicating silica gel to show the change colour due to humidity absorption.
